What Drives Us

Our Mission

Sister Kitten Animal Rescue (SKAR) was founded in 2019. We work to improve animal lives and the public’s perceptions of animals, with a focus on supporting community cats and “outdoor” dogs in Western North Carolina.

We rescue and rehome abandoned and neglected animals, provide trap-neuter-return (TNR) as well as support, education and assistance to community cat caregivers, maintain animals in foster care for adoption, provide veterinary care for sick animals, and promote community animal welfare.

We maintain animals in foster care for adoption, provide veterinary care for sick animals, and promote community animal welfare.

We also respond to weather-related emergencies in the Southeast by assisting with animal rescue and relief efforts.

We’re committed to proactive, respectful neighbor relations and positive collaboration with other local animal rescue and animal control agencies.

What We Do

Our Programs

Community Cats

We work with local caregivers to stabilize populations to improve the health and well-being of community cat colonies. We identify colony members, provide (TNR) including initial vaccinations, assist sick or injured cats, offer regular feeding, place kittens for adoption and provide guidelines for best practices for caregivers.

Foster and Adoption

We maintain animals in foster care for adoption, provide veterinary care for sick animals, and promote community animal welfare.

Rescued kittens often need an adjustment period for socialization or recuperation from surgery, illness, or injury before they can be adopted into a permanent home. We find suitable foster homes that can provide the love, attention, and care that these kittens need to make healthy adjustments to their new, permanent home environments.

“Outdoor” Dogs

We assist guardians of “outdoor” dogs by providing access to spay/neuter services and improved living environments through fence repairs, shelters and other infrastructure improvements.

Rapid Response Rescue

When possible, we provide assistance in areas of the Southeast affected by weather-related disasters through animal recovery and rescue efforts.
